    Description

This is the most exquisite morning robe from the Victorian era or early Edwardian period in a renaissance revival style.
It is made of yards and yards and yards of black silk with cascading ruffles and smocking.  It is lined in the same silk fabric as the outer part of the robe. The sleeves are extra long and are totally pin tuck stitched on the backs with ruffles around the hems.  They are shorter in the front to expose the hands and very long in the back so they billow out as she walks.  The front of the robe has ruffles from top to bottom at the closure and around the hem.  The yolk is smocked under big ruffles falling around the shoulder and neckline. The back has a voluminous, built in center train made from thousands of stitches of smocking starting just under the ruffled collar on the upper back.  The waist is very fitted which showcases the train at the back.  The robe is 3" longer in the back. This lovely morning robe undoubtedly belonged to a very wealthy woman.  It was hand made to order.  This will make an amazing robe using this as an example, as a pattern.
Sadly the robe is in poor condition.  It has rot under the armpits, fading particularly on the left side shoulder and arm.  There is a small shred hole on the waist area front near the ruffled closure.  The hem is coming down on a few of the ruffles.  There is shredding on the outer ruffles at the neckline.  The robe will present beautifully on stage with the armholes patched over.  The design is absolutely fabulous!!  No big tears or gaping holes in the body front or back.  There is a mend on the right side near the armhole.
So, the robe is being sold AS IS for a pattern only or restoration or a stage costume.
